Stress responses heighten. Sleep becomes irregular. The body tightens. And the mind can slip into old patterns of fear, vigilance, or overwhelm — even when life is relatively calm.

What many people don’t realize is that this seasonal shift affects your gut just as much as your mind. And more importantly: your gut is where most of your serotonin is produced. Serotonin isn’t just the “happy chemical.” It’s the neurotransmitter responsible for:

emotional regulation

digestive movement

circadian rhythm

stress recovery

stable mood

appetite

clarity and calm

And here’s the surprising part… About 90–95% of your serotonin is made in your gut — not your brain.

During the darker months, both the gut and the nervous system need more support to keep serotonin production steady. Thankfully, there are gentle, natural practices rooted in physiology, plant wisdom, and trauma-informed care that can help restore balance. One of the most powerful is castor oil packs.

Let’s break down why they work — and how to support your serotonin rhythm as winter deepens.

These cells are sensitive to:

chronic stress

trauma activation

inflammation

poor vagal tone

disrupted sleep

low sunlight

sluggish digestion

Winter adds several challenges:

Less natural sunlight → lower serotonin signaling

Cold weather → decreased circulation in the gut

Holiday stress → higher cortisol

Emotional triggers → vagus nerve suppression

Digestive slowdown → decreased serotonin release

All of this means the gut needs extra support to keep serotonin production stable.

Ensure you purchase high grade cold pressed castor oil doTERRA offers a wonderful one. You'll also want to gather a glass measuring cup designed for liquids, either a cotton or flannel cloth or a castor oil pack wrap - these can be purchased on-line and in various natural health care shops. The benefit of using a wrap is that they are water resistant, and use Velcro or elastic straps to help keep the castor oil pack in place so you can move as you need to while you're wearing the pack. You'll also want to gather your essential oils. All of the oils we're mentioning today can be purchased through doTERRA, here is a link to a doTERRA shopping cart ready for you to make your purchase. You can also purchase these oils from Lotus Garden Botanicals, or Aromatics International. You'll also want to ensure you'll have time to either shower or use a warm wet cloth to clean the castor oil off your skin once you're done.

Here's the step by step guide:

Step 1 — Measure your castor oil

It typically takes 1-2 ounces of castor oil to cover the larger areas of the stomach and or small intestines. Measure this out with a glass measuring cup designed to measure liquids.

Step 2 — Add your essential oils

The proper dilution for therapeutic effect of essential oils is 23 drops per ounce of carrier oil. We suggest using all five of the following essential oils to ensure you receive the benefits we're discussing here. We suggest the adding the following amounts of each of the essential oils listed below:

Ginger - 2 drops

Cardamom - 2 drops

Turmeric - 1 drops

Pink Pepper - 6 drops

Fennel - 12 drops

This formulation comes to a total of 23 drops. Notice, we start with the smaller amounts 1st so you can adjust the drops of fennel if you accidentally add more of the others. You do not want to exceed 23 total drops of essential oils per ounce of castor oil. If you prefer not to formulate this yourself, Call to order this formulation now.

Note - if you have not used these essential oils on your skin before - we always recommend that a skin patch test is completed prior to further topical application to avoid adverse skin reactions. This is done by placing a small drop of the diluted essential oil on the inside crease of your elbow or wrist, and waiting 15 minutes to see if there is any redness, swelling or irritation. If this occurs - these are not essential oils you should be using - and you'll want to use carrier oil to release the essential oils from your skin tissues, and clean cotton cloths to dab the oils off your skin - DO NOT USE WATER as water will drive the essential oils further into your skin causing increased irritation.

Step 3 — Apply to the stomach

Focus over the upper abdomen and small intestine area. Some people prefer to pour the castor oil over their cotton cloth and then place the cloth over their abdomens, whichever method works for you is completely fine. Please be careful when applying the castor oil as it will discolor clothing.

If you are using a castor oil wrap, fasten the wrap so that the pack stays in place.

Then use your heat pad over the area to warm up the castor oil (note - heat pad can be used for just a few moments, or can be used the entire time this is up to you.

Step 5 — Rest 20–45 minutes

This is the most important part - because we're using this castor oil pack to promote serotonin, it's important that what ever you do for the next half an hour or so be supportive to rest and relaxation.

You can take this time to take a nap, rest and meditate, enjoy nature, or pray. You can also use this time to journal about all the amazing things you are doing to support your health and wellness, and thank your body for cooperating with you and letting you know what it needs.

If it feels appropriate, you can choose to do the Vagas Nerve Reset exercise described above, or other vagal nerve activities as well.

Step 6 — Wipe clean

When you're ready, you can either simply wipe your skin clean with a warm damp cloth, or you can take a shower.

This method is best used 3-4 times a week in winter - especially after large celebratory or festive meals!

Be sure to hand wash your castor oil cloths separately with dish soap before laundering them with other materials - as the castor oil does discolor clothing.

It's great to use when we are in a time of transition, and we're not quite sure how what's coming next will play out, but grants us confidence in the abundance of life's blessing and our ability to learn from what we've experienced in the past to make today better.

It is a helpful blend for those of us who just want to arrive already! As it allows us to enjoy and appreciate the journey, and the process of life. If you've heard the phrase love the life you live, this essential oil blend has been formulated to help us do just that. It helps us to open the inner dialog within ourselves that allows us to really listen to our wants, desires, dreams and goals, and allows us to honor those messages and to bring encouragement, optimism and anticipation that these are more in reach today than yesterday, and will be even more in reach tomorrow. Each step we take has a purpose, and brings us one step closer to the promises God has given us in our life.

The essential oils in this blend include:

Wild Orange -

Which fosters a sense of abundance within us, and gives us assurance that there is enough of what you're fearful is running in low supply in yourself, in your home, community, country, world, creation, or within God Himself. Physically, this essential oil is great for increasing circulation within the system, helping us to have more energy and vitality, it helps us with stomach and digestive distress which we can sometimes get while we're stressed and we are not resting and digesting at our best. It also helps us combat colds as it stimulates the lymphatic system, and is antibacterial, which is great again, as when we're stressed or anxious about transitions, and changes, our immune systems have a tendency to get a little depressed.

Grapefruit -

Helps us honor our bodies, and helps us foster respect for our physical self, and grants us the ability to foster a healthy relationship with ourselves by increasing our ability to love, tolerate and accept our physical self, and our physical needs. When we acknowledge our physical needs, we can then work on positive ways to get them met. Physically, grapefruit aids, assists, and synergizes with the properties of wild orange and has added benefit of relieving pain including pain caused by tension or nervous headaches. This is great because we know that pain and tension can be symptoms of holding stress and trauma within our bodies. And we also know that when we're transitioning our normal schedules and self care tend to get a little wacky, so providing us some extra TLC is always a good idea.

Lavender -

Inspires us to be open to true, honest, healthy communication in a calm, accepting manner. Sometimes we feel we've communicated everything there is to say - but we do so in a way that keeps our spiritual self out of the conversation, and our emotions are "checked at the door" Lavender helps us to get back in touch with our emotional needs, and fosters a sense of emotional honesty where we can recognize what needs have gone unmet, and how to better meet them in the future. Physically, lavender helps to calm our heart rate, and decrease muscle tensions and spasms. It helps to promote calmness within the entire body. This is very helpful as it can help us feel less distracted, obsessive, conflicted, insecure during times of transitions, and it can help our bodies find greater sense of balance in a time when many things feel very unbalanced. This helps with our digestion and our immune responses as it allows our parasympathetic nervous system to come back on line sooner.

Roman Chamomile -

Reunites us with our spiritual purpose, and discovering how to live our lives from a grounded center based on who we were created to be - not based on what our circumstances have molded us to be. IT helps us soften ourselves and eases our overactive egos so that we can regain confidence in our life purpose, and to pursue what we love, what fulfills us, and what brings us closer to God and closer to our loved ones. Physically, Roman Chamomile works synergistically with lavender, and further helps to stimulate our internal organs to better support our physical bodies during times of stress, and helps us rest and restore.

Magnolia -

Helps us foster a greater sense of compassion and allows us to treat others and ourselves with mercy and grant grace. With its inviting sweetness, it reminds us of the gentle, pure, maternal nurturing that facilitates deep healing and soul-level change. When we're grounded in the sense of being loved and being safe we naturally see how we need to engage with ourselves better, and with others to move forward seeing, acknowledging and honoring the beauty and dignity within each of us, and we can let go of people/places/circumstances that no longer serve us without regret while moving forward into healthier places without holding onto our past. Physically, magnolia helps us to increase our energy, to balance our hormones, and to hep us achieve restful, peaceful sleep.

This essential oil re-awakens integrity within ourselves even when we are living in environments saturated with malignant thoughts and unkind behaviors, and helps us choose even if we're the only ones to take the higher moral ground and contribute to peace and promote healing. While staying attuned to what God is calling us towards knowing that He is right beside us as we strive to achieve it.

Air X includes the following essential oils:

Litsea (MayChang) - helps us manifest and mobilize our will and encourages us to follow through on our inspiration and promptings, when we are open and connected to our created selves we experience a lot of intuition. Litsea helps us to have the courage to face fears that immediately come after inspiration - the negative self talk we hear from our past failings or from warnings and failings of others. This essential oil helps us recognize the fear that drives these forces, without allowing it to sidetrack us, because they do not come from our created self, but from maladaptive coping skills put on us from our circumstances. This essential oil helps us to recognize what's clouding this central self and helps us to change how we interact with our thoughts, emotions and behaviors so that these habitual patterns align more and more with our purpose in life as we move forward, not with our past that holds up back. Physically, litsea helps to detoxify our bodies, and support our immune system with its antibacterial, anti-fungal and disinfectant properties. It also promotes pain relief and decreases blood pressure.

Tangerine - Helps us reconnect with our spontaneity. It helps us reconnect with joy and lightness of heart, and to go back to the goodness and purity of our childhoods. Our creativity is often sniffled by things imposed on us by others - by conformity to social norms, by following social rules, by wanting to fit in with the crowd and be accepted. However, Tangerine helps us to remember that we don't have to fit in, because simply through our creation God states that we belong. With true belonging, comes an influx of creative energy that flows through our hearts, and has the ability to manifest in ways we feel appropriate, suitable, and ready to explore. Physically, tangerine helps to synergize with litsea in detoxifying the body, while it energizes us and breaks down mucous and oxidation within the body.

Grapefruit - as stated above, grapefruit helps us honor our bodies, and helps us foster respect for our physical self, and grants us the ability to foster a healthy relationship with ourselves by increasing our ability to love, tolerate and accept our physical self, and our physical needs. When we acknowledge our physical needs, we can then work on positive ways to get them met. When we are subjected to toxic situations within the work place, families, from our beloveds, we often deny our physical needs, so this is an important essential oil to re-gain a sense of what is good for us. Physically, grapefruit aids, assists, and synergizes with the properties of wild orange and has added benefit of relieving pain including pain caused by tension or nervous headaches. This is great because we know that when we're detoxing our environment, our community, our bodies, our emotions, a lot comes up and our waste receptacles can get overrun pretty fast, and in the body it can cause pain as waste and debris are re-circulated rather than eliminated through our exhalation, our urination, our defecation, and sweat.

Frankincense - Keeps us connected to truth, as it helps us identify falsehoods we've been subjected to. This essential oil is connected deeply with our spirituality, and helps us re-ground or become more grounded in our spiritual lives. It helps us form healthy attachment to our fathers and male authority figures in our lives so that we don't feel abandoned, but loved and protected as we spiritually evolve into more of the fullness of our true self, and honor this self in our thoughts, words, actions, and desires. Physically, frankincense helps to stimulate our immune system, to help cellular regeneration of healthy cells while promoting the death and non-replication of unhealthy cells, while alleviating inflammation and pain within the body.

Cardamom - Allows us to find greater objectivity within life's circumstances by helping us gain greater mental, and emotional sobriety and self-control. This is helpful as we gain greater awareness of who and what is polluting our environment, community, home-life, workplace, spiritual life as it helps us step back and disconnect from frustration or anger and helps us address these people/circumstances from a balanced, level, calm grounded place. It also helps us to see how we've contributed to things that cause us to be angry or frustrated, and helps us non-judgmentally make the needed changes to promote healthier responses to bring us more peace and a greater sense of self-control and perhaps even better, self-awareness. Physically, cardamom relieves congestion in the lungs and throat, as well as in the intestines and colon, helping to move things out of our system while redesign inflammation and reducing muscle spasms and stimulating healthy digestion.

Lemon essential oil can be used for many things, and many people associate the scent with freshness, and cleanliness as the oil was used in many cleaning products before the chemical constituents were isolated, and were synthetically created and substituted for the whole essential oil.

With the resurgence of aromatherapy's popularity in the late 1990's and again around 2010, lemon has been touted as a must have in your first aid kit, in your cleaning cabinet, and in your book bag or at your desk.

Before we talk about how you may want to use this essential oil, let's talk about safety. If you know us, we are always aware of the potential for misuse or improper use of essential oils and of the major adverse reactions people have had while using an essential oil, or an essential oil product without knowing how to do so safely. If you're a client of ours, and if you've gone through our essential oil safety course, where you feel you could teach it to other people, please feel free to skip ahead, otherwise, we ask that you read this very important information.

Safety First

If you have any type of lemon allergy or sensitivity, using lemon essential oil is not recommended.

If you are pregnant or desire to use essential oils with children under 2 years old, please schedule a consultation prior to use.

If your lemon essential oil is more than 1 year old, and has been subject to the sun, heat, or frequent opening and closing, there is a good chance that it has oxidative, and its therapeutic properties have waned, oxidative oils will not smell like a freshly cut lemon, and are responsible for increased skin irritation.

If you have sensitive skin, and you'd like to apply lemon essential oil topically, please do a patch skin test placing 1 drop of the oil on the crease of the elbow or the inside of the wrist and wait for 15min to see if there is any reaction. While doing this, keep a clean cotton cloth or towel near by and your choice of carrier oil such as olive oil, almond oil, or apricot oil.

If you see any redness or irritation apply the carrier oil to the skin, and blot up with the cotton cloth, continue with a second application and blotting, and a third until the irritation is relieved - DO NOT apply water to the area as it will only drive the irritant in further.

Topical application without dilution is only meant to help you with acute (sudden onset) of symptom for 7-10 days. Like OnGuard, it can be used in a multitude of ways, aromatically by inhaling the distilled or passively diffused vapor, as a steam inhalation, or inhaled directly from the bottle. It can also be used topically, applied to the bottoms of the feet, the back of the ear lobes, along the neck and chest - ensuring proper dilution as several of the Essential Oils that make up this blend can be irritating to the skin. It can be used with a dispersant to be added into bath water (not to exceed 6 drops essential oil) body lotions (ensuring proper dilution ratio not to exceed more than a .5% strength to minimize possibility of skin irritation as there are some strong essential oils in this blend). Under the supervision of an Aromatherapist it can also be taken internally via capsules at the proper strength for a predetermined amount of days. These are just some of the most common ways this blend is used, other applications can be discussed based on the symptoms that you’re having.

The reason this blend is so effective when working with people who are coming down with an illness, is because the vast majority of the single essential oils used to make up this blend help us when we are overwhelmed, fatigued and exhausted. They support our adrenal gland function, boost our immune system response, help to move and regulate fluids within the body, and have a broad range of both antibacterial properties and antiviral properties.

Powerhouse by Lotus Garden Botanicals contains:

Lemon Eucalyptus

Oregano

Clove Bud

Thyme ct thujanol

Rosemary ct cineole

Sage (Dalmatian Sage)

Palmarosa

Lavender

This diluted formulation can be applied up to every hour as needed until symptoms are alleviated and unless you have extremely sensitive skin, this formulation should be safe to use on the bottoms of your feet, back of ear lobes, and along your neck and pulse points. (Note, if you have sensitive skin, do not apply this oil straight or "neat" to your skin, always dilute to 5% in a carrier oil and do a patch skin test to the insides of your wrists or crease of your elbow if no irritation appears in 15 min you can apply as described)

What does that mean? Hip extension occurs when our hip elongates and in typical day to day activities, this happens during walking. This muscle is responsible for allowing you to swing your leg behind you. When it's functioning properly, during walking, it allows you to keep your leg planted behind you long enough to take a normal stride. If you're noticing that your stride is short for your height, this muscle may need a little TLC.

The semimembranosus runs the whole length of our thigh, and attaches to the inside of the bottom of our knee (at the top of our calf area). And so it's also responsible for flexing our knee - or bending our knee. So you can see that with actions on both sides of the muscle body, there can be a sort of oppositional tightness which, if not addressed can cause tearing of the tendon at the inside of the knee. This causes pain that is termed semimembranosus tendinopathy and is pain felt on the inside of the knee that can radiate down to the backside of the calf, or up through the thigh.

Semitendinosus: This muscle works in conjunction with the Semimembranosus, and it too supports the backwards movement of our leg, and the bending our knees. It also causes the internal rotation of our leg. You know if this muscle is weak when your natural resting position while laying is to have your feet splayed out away from your body, and it's difficult for you to have your toes pointing towards your body, sometimes people even have trouble pointing their toes simply up towards the ceiling.

Unlike the Semimembranosus, the Semitendinosus has a very long muscle tendon, you can feel it as the rope like cord running from your knee up your thigh. So tearing of this tendon is not very likely, however, muscle fatigue here can cause fascial adhesion which affect the muscles closest to it, such as the Semimembranosus.

Bicep Femoris: This muscle has 2 heads - or points of origin that connect to each other like our biceps in our arms. The long head of the bicep fermoris starts at the pubis bone, and forms the bulk of the muscle along the outer area of our back thigh. The short head starts midway down the femur, and joins the long head as it connects at the knee. This muscle connects to the outside of our fibula (the outer calf bone), and the outer aspect of our tibia.

The primary function of this muscle is to bend our knee. However, due to its long head that attaches to the pelvis, it is also involved in hip extension, especially with movements such as standing erect after bending over to pick something off the ground. They also work together to rotate the leg laterally - so if you have that lateral splaying of your legs in laying, these muscles may be tight and over worked causing the leg to pull to the outside. In walking, this muscle also is responsible for bringing our leg forward by flexing the knee and not allowing it to stay in extension behind us. So if you have a shortened stride, this muscle may be overly tight.

Bicep Femoris tendonitis can occur with tears or strains to this tendon occur do to over or miss use, and typically is felt 2-4 inches above the outer knee joint on the muscle tendon.

Abductor Mangus: This muscle is a large, triangular muscle that helps make up the bulk of our medical thigh. It attaches to the pelvis and the top of our femur and then runs along the femur and eventually ends in two places, attaching to the femur 3-4 inches above the knee, and then attaching to the head of the femur at the knee.

As such an odd-shaped muscle, different portions of it serve different functions within the body. Some of the muscle fibers act to flex the thigh at the hip, so allow us to bring our leg towards our chest; then other fibers act in opposition to this can cause thigh extension and allow the outward rotation of the thigh. However, the entire muscle contributes to the leg moving towards the inside of the body (squeezing our thighs together).

This muscle can contribute to knee pain as it works to rotate the thighs inward, tightness in the muscle can put strain on the medial portion of the knee.

Gracilis: The gracilis muscle is a thin muscle that starts at the pubis bone of the pelvis, and stretches along the inside of the back of the thigh and attaches to the inside of the tibia (the inner calf bone). It's primary function at the knee is to bend it, but it also rotates the tibia inwardly on the femur. It also helps to bring our thigh in towards our body like the abductor mangus.

This muscle is not typically noted in knee pain, however, as it shares an attachment site with the semitendinosus, and the sartorius (which we won't be talking bout in this article). Weaknesses/strains/tears in this muscle can contribute to Pes Anserine bursitis, and Pes Anserine bursitis caused by dysfunction of the joint in turn can cause strain and tears of this muscle Which is an inflammation of the bursa sac under the inside of the lower knee. This bursa is designed to cushion the movement of the joint and allow the tendons of the muscle to slide rather than grind as the joint is in motion. Then the area within the joint is constricted due to chronic inflammation, the bursa itself gets inflamed, and during stepping up or stepping down, and running - bending of the knee at a larger angle than typical for walking - the knee will feel pain as the bones of the joint constrict the bursa sac.

As you can see, each of these muscles have tendons that reach below the knee, and so tightness within these muscles naturally constricts the space within our knee joint, which can contribute to inflammation within the joint. But, in reality, the area of concern is not necessarily your knee join, but it's within these muscle structures, and typically these muscle structures become dysfunctional due to poor hip mechanics, as that is where these muscles originate from. When there is fascial banding and constriction along these muscles, they can refer pain to the knee (meaning that you won't feel pain in the muscle structure, but only in the knee).

This is recommended if you cannot weight bear on your knee easily, as it works the knee indirectly by creating more movement of the muscles.

If you're able to weight bear easily, you can try this lesson. It is helpful to bring further awareness to where your habitual patterns of movement are, how your body moves together, and you can see where movement is halted due to dysfunction. Working through these movement patterns are not meant to be building muscles or causing fatigue - in fact, you want to make the movements small, keep it in a range of comfort where there is no strain or effort.

These lessons help bring greater mobility within the body by freeing the body of habitual patterns and creating more healthy ones.

The next thing to consider is to do some stretching exercises in order to bring greater flexibility within the joint and muscles. I like to refer people to videos from Dr. Joe, this one has both simple exercises and a stretch, this one is specifically for stretching. Here is one from Tom Merrick, if you prefer a male instructor, and are more used to typical exercise routines to follow along with.

It is a good idea after stretching and exercising these muscle groups to apply heat and or cold in order to help relax the muscles even further post the exercise. Apply ice only if there is any heat coming off of the tissues before starting the stretching or mobilization.

Aromatherapy formulations can be applied before these routines or after as desired. And it's a good idea to switch out traditional stretches/exercises with the Feldenkrais awareness lessons in order to continue to create healthy patterns of movement while the muscles are getting stronger.

Let us know if this was helpful and brought insights into what you're experiencing!

If you'd like to schedule a consultation to talk about how you can increase your mobility and decrease muscle pain, please reach out today!

It helps us identify, or strengthen our resolve to walk with purpose and be committed to our own lives.

Caraway (Carum carvi) is helpful in uncovering things that are hidden, and overcome feelings of being unloved, unstable, uprooted, indecisive. It is able to instill in us a sense of unconditional love so that we may remain confident in forging ahead on the correct path with emotional and spiritual support.

Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) allows us to foster and deepen our sense of objectivity and overcome feelings of objectifying others, rationalizing blame, falling into perpetual frustration, becoming inebriated by anger, inability to think clearly. It is especially helpful during times when our anger goes to our head or we become hotheaded losing control or rational function.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) gives us a sense of proper responsibility and overcome feelings of not being able to be in tune to our sense of self, numbness, shamefulness, lack of desire for things or to do things and sensations that we're unable to take responsibility for our actions, and allow others to do the same. It is useful when we feel defeated and have little or no desire to improve our situation.

Anise (Illicium verum) clears the way forward and helps us overcome feelings of stagnation in relationships, stifled creativity, stuck energy, and deflation. It's helpful to establish or re-0establish a sense of sure-footedeness when we feel overwhelmed or tired to regain motivation as we see the larger picture forming.

With these mental and emotional pick me ups, it's easy to see how this blend can help us make the emotional shifts needed to alter sensations that we often have associated with an upset stomach that are "in our heads" or in our hearts.

On top of these energetic, mental, emotional, and spiritual shifts that this Essential Oil blend provides us, the combination of these oils provide us with physical benefits as well.

Peppermint helps with gastric and pancreatic stimulation. It helps increase the amount of pancreatic enzymes and as such it can help with nausea, motion sickness, vomiting. It also helps with gastrointestinal, biliary and renal spasms, and so can help with colic, pain, flatulence, spasmodic IBS, kidney colic. It is also analgesic, and helps with pain and inflammation.

Coriander is also a gastrointestinal stimulant and carminative, so it helps with chronic hypotonic digestive conditions that cause distension, flatulence, colic, intestinal fermentation, dysbiosis, chronic gastroenteritis. It also is good for loss of appetite, for pain and swelling, and for intestinal parasites.

Ginger is also a gastrointestinal stimulant and a carminative . It's known to help with indigestion, flatulence, nausea; chronic gastritis and anorexia. It's also good for vomiting, travel and altitude sickness. It is also anti-inflammatory and stops spasms including intestinal colic and IBS, and it detoxifies the liver from both diet and drugs. It is a mild antibiotic for intestinal infections.

Caraway is an excellent digestive stimulant and carminative for upper indigestion, distension, flatulence and aerophagia. It also helps to counteract intestinal fermentation, and it helps to address acute and chronic liver-gallbladder congestion with indigestion and right flank pains, and helps in colonic contractions as well as being anti-parasitic and antiamoebic.

Cardamon is a strong gastrointestinal relaxant, it stops GI spams and helps with digestive conditions especially nervous indigestion. It helps with nausea, vomiting and motion sickness, and stops muscle cramps, fatigue, helps to regain focus and stops disorientation. It also balances alternating constipation and diarrhea while clearing indigestion, epigastric distension, pain, halitosis and heartburn.

Fennel is also a great digestive stimulant and helps with upper digestive atony with indigestion, flatulence, appetite loss, constipation and vomiting. It relaxes the digestive system and stops muscle spams and conditions that cause spasms such as colic, IBS, colitis, diarrhea and arophagia. It also helps to get rid of intestinal parasites.

Anise is a carminative and appetite stimulant, and helps stop stomach spasms it's often used with flatulence, appetite loss, nausea, hiccups, colic and colitis. It's beneficial in helping restore gastric secretions to reduce intestinal fermentation.

These Essential Oils have been specially blended by doTERRA in order to work synergistically and to provided added benefits over and above what the individual Essential Oils would be able to produce.

Using Essential Oils in this way for something as common as vomiting, yet as painful as IBS, allows us to achieve a state of "normalcy" relatively quickly when these symptoms arise.

There are many ways this Essential Oil can be used to help address stomach and GI concerns safely and effectively once you know that you're not taking any medications that could cause a drug reaction, and once you know that you're not going to have a skin reaction. The most common is to simply apply the Essential Oil blend directly to the skin neat for the first 2-3 hours of the acute occurrence, and then to dilute the Essential Oil to 10% and continue applying directly to the area (or to the reflex points, or to Meridian points that are associated with the GI system); a bath or compress using a dispersent with the Essential Oil so that it mixes with the water rather than being repelled by the water; or a clay pack.

If you or a loved one suffers from any of the symptoms mentioned above and you've tried this Essential Oil, or others, please let us know how they've helped you.

So I knew I had to do something fast.

I didn't realize until I was talking to the urgent care doctor how many people ignore these things, don't seek medical attention, and just hope it will go away. My doctor, and nurse and acupuncturist said the same thing. Too many people wait too long to address their health and wellness concerns.

I'll challenge you to incorporate a practice of mindfulness everyday in order to catch things at the first signs. Doing this consistently will allow you to track changes in your wellness as the days and weeks pass. This is often vital information that makes the difference between a symptom and a cause.

The work that I do with my clients often starts with addressing symptoms, and then spreads to tackling the cause which provides them a lifetime of healing and greater wellness overall, instead of a Band-Aid that masks the symptoms. This is true for mental, emotional and spiritual health as well as for physical and energetic health.

Mindfulness can be something as simple a paying attention to the thoughts that you are thinking, or the emotions that you are feeling, or the sensations you're having within your body, or the tension/pain that you are experiencing. You don't have to work with being aware of all of these at once. I recommend that you pick one of them to focus on, and choose a particular time of day to spend 5-10 minutes being curious about what comes up as you focus on those aspects of yourself. Explore with calmness and curiosity what you find, and with zero judgement write it down, and contemplate why you may be experiencing that particular thought/emotion/sensation/pain, and write down what you come up with. Stick with one aspect of mindfulness until you feel comfortable with it.

Once you've been able to establish mindfulness within an area of yourself, you'll be able to act upon the information that you've received, and this is where mindfulness meets empowerment! This is an exciting shift that I'm looking forward to helping you with.

Diffusing an essential oil in the area you are in while you enter this state of mindfulness can help you connect more to your body, emotions, and mind. Below is a list of essential oils you can use for this, please note this recommendation is for the inhalation of the difused essential oil either through an active difuser or through a passive difuser - not for topical application. I have included botanical names and variety types when there are multiple essential oils with similar names and there are contraindications that would require you to set up a consultation to ensure you can safely use them while having certain conditions or while on certain medications.

To help with mindfulness with your thoughts:

Basil Ocimum basilicum L ct Linalool (note other varieties have contraindications - set up a consultation prior to use)

Lime

Ylang Ylang

Coriander

Lemon

Lemon Myrtle - has contraindications with certain medications - set up a consultations prior to use

To help with mindfulness with your emotions:

Clary Sage

Siberian Fir use only Abies sibirica Ledeb.
